Before You Deploy:

  1. Consider granting Power of Attorney to an individual you trust so they can act on your behalf regarding your student loan account. Military legal assistance, including help preparing a Power of Attorney, is located on many bases, ships and installations. Find a Legal Assistance Office near you.

As an alternative, you can designate an individual to receive your account information from MOHELA without having the ability to make account changes.
  2. Create an online account with MOHELA to help keep you up-to-date on your loans and to quickly and easily update your contact information, including your email address so we can share important account information with you. Don’t forget to sign up for paperless delivery of correspondence. Emails may be blocked by the Armed Forces so you may want to use an alternate email address on your account to ensure you receive timely information.
  3. Review your repayment options including deferments, forbearances and repayment plans. Certain repayment plans may provide a better long-term benefit should you qualify for lower payment and Public Service loan forgiveness.
  4. Sign up for Auto Debit to have your payments withdrawn automatically so your account will stay in good standing.
  5. Place an active duty alert on your credit report to reduce the risk that you’ll become a victim of identity theft.
