Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Servicer Transfer

On July 1, federal loan servicing for the U.S. Department of Education’s PSLF program began transitioning to MOHELA from FedLoan Servicing.

Due to the unprecedented interest in the limited PSLF waiver we are currently experiencing longer processing times for PSLF forms. Be assured that if your PSLF form is received by us on time, it will be processed under the limited PSLF waiver rules. See What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022 for more information on submitting your PSLF form on time.

  • Loans serviced by MOHELA? If you faxed or mailed your PSLF form to MOHELA it may take up to 14 days for your mohela.com account to note that the form was received. Please allow at least 90 business days for your form to be processed.

  • Loans NOT serviced by MOHELA? Your demographic information will not be on file until the PSLF form is processed which is currently taking at least 90 business days. Once processed your loans will be transferred from your current servicer to MOHELA.

If MOHELA is your servicer and your PSLF form has been approved, we anticipate receiving and processing payment count updates from Federal Student Aid under the limited PSLF waiver beginning mid to late October. Therefore, your payment counts may not reflect the actual count until all the updates are complete. Specifically, new Consolidation loans may have their payment counts temporarily set to 0 while the payment count update is processing. We appreciate your patience while we work to accurately update your payment counts.

Please log in to mohela.com to manage your loans and check out your PSLF tracker information. If your PSLF information has not yet been updated, please be assured we are diligently working to make these updates as they are received.

If your loans are serviced by another federal loan servicer and your PSLF form has been approved, please continue to contact your servicer until you are notified that your loans have been transferred to us. Please do not re-submit PSLF forms for approved periods of employment.

If your PSLF form was approved by FedLoan Servicing, they will transfer your PSLF form information to us. Please do not re-submit PSLF forms for approved periods of employment.

If you have Direct Loan(s) and work in public service but have not completed a PSLF form, you must submit your PSLF form to MOHELA for all periods of qualifying employment by the timeframes explained under What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022. The best way to check if your employer qualifies and complete a PSLF form, is to access the FSA PSLF Help Tool. You may upload your PSLF form on MOHELA.com or mail/fax the form to:

If you have FFEL Program loans or Perkins Loans and work in public service but have not consolidated your loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan, you must apply to consolidate your loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan by Oct. 31, 2022. You can’t receive credit for time in repayment if you don’t consolidate and submit your PSLF form by the timeframes explained under What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022.

If you consolidated your loans after May 1 to take advantage of the limited PSLF waiver and you have been notified that the consolidation process is complete, your new consolidated student loan is being serviced by us. As a first step, we recommend you create a user ID and password on mohela.com to access your account. If you submitted your PSLF form to FedLoan Servicing this information will transfer to us.

If you have consolidated your loans, but have not completed a PSLF form, you must submit your PSLF form to MOHELA for all periods of qualifying employment by the timeframes explained under What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022. What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022

On. Oct. 31, 2022, the limited PSLF waiver ends, and beginning Nov. 1, 2022, we’re going back to the normal program requirements for both PSLF and TEPSLF.

Don’t panic! You don’t have to submit a PSLF form to MOHELA by Oct. 31, 2022, if you have completed one of the actions below.

  1. Use the PSLF Help Tool by Oct. 31, 2022, to generate a PSLF form that is eventually approved. ED will maintain a record if you complete all the steps of the PSLF Help Tool on or before Oct. 31, 2022, but you must still print, sign, have your employer(s) sign, and submit the PSLF form to MOHELA, the PSLF servicer.

  2. Use the PSLF Help Tool by Oct. 31, 2022, and have a pending review of your employer’s eligibility and ED later determines your employer is eligible. If you use the PSLF Help Tool on or before Oct. 31, 2022, and your employer’s status is listed as "likely ineligible/undetermined" or "ineligible," but you believe your employer is eligible and you elect to proceed through the PSLF Help Tool, you will be able to complete all the steps of the tool and request a review of your employer. However, you will not be able to print your form for signature or submission while the review is pending. Once ED completes its review of your employer’s eligibility, you will be notified. ED will also maintain a record if you complete all the steps of the PSLF Help Tool on or before Oct. 31, 2022, and a review is pending. You will receive the benefit of the limited PSLF waiver if ED later determines the employer is eligible.

  3. By submitting a manual PSLF form (not generated by the PSLF Help Tool) with your employer’s signature that must be dated on or before Oct. 31, 2022, and this form must later be approved. When the limited PSLF waiver ends on Oct. 31, 2022, we will process your manually submitted PSLF form using the date an authorized official from your employer signed your PSLF form. To receive benefits of the limited PSLF waiver, the employer’s signature and date on your PSLF form must be on or before Oct. 31, 2022, even if you submit your form at a later date.

If the date signed by your employer’s authorized official is on or after Nov. 1, 2022, the normal program requirements for PSLF and TEPSLF apply.

If your PSLF form has been denied because your employer is not eligible, you may seek review of whether your employer qualifies for PSLF, using the FSA PSLF Help Tool. Here are some things to know as you consider seeking this review:

  • You can learn more about the qualifying employment aspects to the PSLF Help Tool by reading our recent article Become a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Help Tool Ninja.

  • To prevent processing delays, if your employer can’t be found in our employer database, you should upload a W-2 so we can verify your employer.

  • If your employer is flagged in the employer database as ineligible, you should provide us documentation to show that the employer could be eligible. For example, if we have designated an employer as ineligible because it is a for-profit corporation, but you believe that the organization is a not-for-profit organization that may be eligible, provide documentation showing that the organization that employs you is in fact a not-for-profit organization.

If your PSLF form has been denied because you do not have eligible loans and need to consolidate to be eligible for the limited PSLF waiver, you must apply to consolidate your FFEL Program loans and Perkins Loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan by Oct. 31, 2022. You can’t receive credit for time in repayment if you don’t consolidate and submit your PSLF form on time. After applying for consolidation, you must then submit a PSLF form to MOHELA for all periods of qualifying employment by the timeframes explained under What Happens When the Waiver Ends on Oct. 31, 2022.

We are hard at work transitioning PSLF to MOHELA and appreciate your patience during this period. We will continue to update this page with important information.
