What is a deferment?
A period of time during repayment in which you, if eligible, may suspend your loan payments.
Can payments be made during my deferment?
Yes, payments may be made at any time during the deferment.
What is the benefit of a deferment over a forbearance?
The primary advantage is the potential interest savings. During a forbearance, you are responsible
for the accrued interest. During a deferment, only borrowers with Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent PLUS and GradPLUS
loans are responsible for the interest that accrues.
How do I request a deferment?
It is your responsibility to complete a deferment request and to provide MOHELA with any
necessary documentation to support your eligibility.
What types of deferments are available?
Deferments are available for a variety of situations including the following:
- Unemployment
- Graduate Fellowship Programs
- Internship/Residency Programs
- In-School
- Disability
- Economic Hardship
- Volunteer Service

Will I be notified when a deferment is placed on my loan(s)?
Yes, MOHELA will send a letter advising you if the deferment was approved or denied on your loan(s).
If applicable, we will also send a letter advising you of any forbearance placed on the loan for any
delinquency prior to the deferment.
